We love Richard's intelligent, generous, and methodical approach to teaching yoga.
Read More His fascination with the yogic texts has inspired him to take traditional practices and adjust them to both preserve their original form and make them useful for the modern yogi, revealing new insights into the practices and ourselves.

Richard is one of the pioneers of yoga on the west coast. He began his study in 1980, and trained for several years in the early 1980s at the BKS Iyengar Yoga Institute in San Francisco. In 1987 he co-founded the Piedmont Yoga Studio in Oakland, California.

Richard has written four books for Shambhala, The Yoga of Breath: A Step-by-Step Guide to Pranayama (2002), Pranayama: Beyond the Fundamentals (2006), Original Yoga: Rediscovering Traditional Practices of Hatha Yoga (2012) and Yoga FAQ: Almost Everything You Need to Know about Yoga–from Asanas to Yamas (2017). He has also recorded a 7-disc set of instructional CDs for Shambhala titled The Practice of Pranayama: An In-Depth Guide to the Yoga of Breath (2010).

We are deeply grateful for Richard's contribution to the yoga community, and for bringing to life the mysterious practices and rituals of our ancient sages. Like a proper yogi professor, Richard lives in a cottage built in 1906 in beautiful Berkeley, California, where he teaches weekly public classes at You and the Mat.
