Namaste and welcome back to the discovery of the power of mantras. We have been looking at various kinds of mantras in our previous episodes. Today we are going to look at another mantra which is very simple but at the same time which can help to transform us in quite a significant manner. We are going to look at the mantra om namo nama. You would recognize the word namo or nama from the word namaste.
Namaste is formed of two words nama te. Nama means a salutation and te is you. So in this mantra we just keep the word namo nama. The word namo has a slightly different phonetic ending because of certain rules but we need not worry about that. All we need to do is to merge ourselves into the sound of om namo nama and discover how it can help to bring in the sense of humility.
Nama is salutation but in order to genuinely salute somebody it requires or it requires the experience of deep respect for the other and that we can bend our heads down and that does not in any way diminish who we are. And it is a very helpful gesture also to bow respectfully with humility at different times in our lives. In this case the salutation is to any force that we believe is greater than ourselves. That force can be within, that force can be without, it can be a salutation to the mighty forces of nature. It can be this recognition of the fact that at the end of the day we are insignificant in a certain sense in the limited form of who we are.
We are not yet unfortunately the almighty, egoistic self that we would like to believe and in our present position we are not yet in the simplicity and vastness of our universal self. So to remind ourselves of the relative nature of our existence this mantra can help us to bow down and be grateful for the opportunity of being who we are. So repeat the mantra after me, om namo namah, say that om namo namah, very good. And then you can also add the gesture of namaste, we will do it together om namo namah, once more om namo namah, lovely. This time close your eyes, bring your hands together in the gesture of namaste again and keeping that position or that inner posture of surrender and offering, repeat the mantra om namo namah, once more om namo namah.
We can also repeat this mantra with a certain melody which is om namo namah. You would have noticed that at the end I said namah instead of namah and that is really because of the, or rather to respect the melody of the chant. So repeat after me, om namo namah, lovely, together. Om namo namah, once more om namo namah, when we salute something we automatically need to think of something else to whom we are surrendering ourselves in all humility. That something can be anything of your imagination, the action can be anything that corresponds to your sense of giving and keeping that in mind, let yourselves go in all humility and gratitude and chant om namo namah.
